A Year Ago This Week

The last time I saw my brother alive was on September 16, 2024
The last time I saw my brother alive was on September 16, 2024

A year ago this week, I was preparing for some very special visitors. Boyd and his wife, Keri, were coming to visit, and not only was I excited to see them, but I was even more excited that they would be staying at my house.

My husband might describe me as an organized mess, so I took the time to clear out the guest room of my various projects and get it ready just for them. One of my favorite traditions when guests come over is preparing a little welcome basket filled with treats and practical items they might need. I always include food, tissues, and water, but for Boyd, I made sure there was plenty of dark chocolate since I knew it was his favorite. I also tucked in chapstick and lotion—two things I almost always forget to pack myself when traveling, but always end up needing in a new climate. Small things, really, but I hoped they made their stay feel comfortable and cared for.

It’s surreal to look back now, a year later. So much has happened—and in some ways, so much has not. Life keeps moving forward, but in a different way than before. I still get emotional when I think about Boyd and what could have, or should have, been.

What I do know is that my purpose now has shifted. Through Suzie Sews Sunshine, I am committed to supporting programs led by professionals who can truly help those facing mental health disorders and PTSD. This mission is deeply personal, and I’m grateful for the way this little business is growing into something bigger than I could have imagined.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, I see this as a new beginning. Stay tuned—there is so much more light and hope ahead.
