The Shift Towards Authentic Living
There’s something wild and wonderful that happens when you stop living your life to meet the expectations of everyone else. For me, that shift didn’t come with a lightning bolt or dramatic breakdown. It came quietly and steadily. It was through time spent in scripture, seeking Jesus, and letting His truth rewrite the lies I had been living under.
The truth? I’ve changed. Dramatically.
The Burden of Perfection
For a long time, I felt like I had to be perfect at everything. Not just good — perfect. I didn’t want anyone to see my flaws or know where I struggled. I thought mistakes meant failure, and failure meant judgment. So, I hustled. I performed. I polished everything I touched. That kind of pressure is exhausting.
I spent so much energy trying to make it all look effortless, while inside, I was holding my breath.
But somewhere along the way, I exhaled.
Discovering Grace Through Jesus
That breath came when I started getting serious about my relationship with Jesus. As I spent more time in scripture, I began to understand who He really is and who I truly am. I started letting go of the need to be perfect and began holding on to grace. I realized that imperfection isn’t something to hide; it’s something to embrace. My mistakes, my messy middle, my do-overs — they’re part of what makes me me. And honestly? I’m proud of them. I have a lot. I’ll probably make more this week. But that’s okay.
Striving for Excellence, Not Perfection
That doesn’t mean I don’t care about doing things well. I do. I continue to strive for excellence in everything I undertake. If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing with care, effort, and intention. I have high standards, and I’m not sorry if that makes others uncomfortable. I no longer shrink my goals to make other people feel safe. I no longer compare myself to others, and I don’t believe anyone should compare themselves to me. We all have our own strengths. I celebrate mine, and I genuinely enjoy watching others shine in theirs.
Living Creatively and Authentically
I’ve stopped apologizing for being creative. I’ve stopped holding back my ideas, my joy, or my voice. I’ve started living more fully and freely by saying yes to the things that bring meaning and connection.
These days, I sew sunshine into everything I can; in my work, my home, my faith, and the stitched creations I share with the world. I cheer loudly at swim meets, support my neurodivergent son through every win and wobble, and keep dreaming up new ways to bring light into hard places.
The New Me: Unfiltered and Unapologetic
The Suzie of today still loves excellence, but she no longer worships perfection. She’s not afraid to laugh at herself. She’s not afraid to cry in front of others. She’s not afraid to take up space.
I’m still growing. Still learning. Still becoming. But I’m not going back. Not to the pressure. Not to the fear of being found out. Not to the lie that I have to earn my worth by performing.
A Journey of Growth and Freedom
So here I am. Imperfect. Unfiltered. Unshaken. Unapologetically me.
And if you’re on your own journey toward grace and growth, I’m cheering for you. Keep going. There’s freedom on the other side.
The Importance of Community
Finding a supportive community can make all the difference in your journey. Surrounding yourself with people who uplift you and encourage your growth is essential. They can provide the motivation you need when you feel like giving up.
Embracing Change
Change is often uncomfortable, but it is necessary for growth. Embrace the changes in your life, even when they feel daunting. Each step forward is a step toward becoming your true self.
Seeking Inspiration
Look for inspiration in unexpected places. Whether it’s through art, nature, or the stories of others, inspiration can fuel your journey. It reminds you that you are not alone in your struggles.
The Power of Self-Reflection
Take time to reflect on your journey. Journaling can be a powerful tool for understanding your thoughts and feelings. It allows you to track your progress and recognize how far you’ve come.
Celebrating Small Wins
Don’t forget to celebrate your small victories. Each step forward is worth acknowledging. These moments of joy can motivate you to keep pushing forward.
Final Thoughts
Your journey is uniquely yours. Embrace every moment, every mistake, and every triumph. Remember, you are not alone. There is a community out there cheering for you, just as I am. Keep going; the best is yet to come.
