Embracing the Light: A Journey Through Fear and Healing

Updated: Aug 4, 2025

A Story of Transformation

Last week, I shared a story in my Sunday school class that I’ve carried quietly for years. It’s one of those stories that doesn’t just rattle you; it shapes you. While I’ve kept it tucked away for a long time, I think it’s time to bring it into the light.

I was 8½ months pregnant when it happened. I had a 4-year-old at home, along with a 7-year-old and a 10-year-old. Life was already a circus of cereal bowls, school drop-offs, endless laundry, spelling tests, and sibling squabbles. I was navigating pregnancy cravings and preschool tantrums, all while helping with homework and praying no one came down with a stomach bug before bedtime.

In short, I was deep in the thick of motherhood.

The Nightmare Begins

So when someone anonymously accused me of prostitution in a nearby township and claimed I was running a prostitution ring out of my own home, it felt like I had been tossed into a nightmare I didn’t even know I was dreaming. I was taken to the police station and questioned. I received threatening letters in the mail from this anonymous accuser. These letters were venomous and cruel, meant to break me.

And for a while, they did.

I was scared. Not just in the moment, but for a long time after. I feared being falsely accused again. I feared being convicted of something I didn’t do. I feared the power people could have over your name, your safety, and your peace.

The Pursuit of Perfection

Maybe that’s when I started chasing perfection. If I could do everything just right, no one could accuse me of anything. If I kept my house spotless, smiled in every setting, dotted every "i," and triple-checked every list, maybe I could stay safe. Maybe I could remain untouchable.

But perfection is a terrible prison. You lose parts of yourself inside it.

The Power of Light

The truth is, no amount of perfection can keep fear out. Only light can do that.

Fear is the opposite of light. It thrives in shadows, in secrets, and in silence. But light exposes and heals. It softens. It strengthens. It shines in darkness and reminds you who you are.

That’s why I choose sunshine. Not just as a cute theme for my handmade business. Not just because yellow makes me happy. Sunshine is the brightest thing we have here on earth. When I say I want to live in the light, I mean it. I want to be light. I want to point to the Light. Someday, I want to stand in the presence of God and His Son in heaven, full of brightness and free of fear.

Overcoming Lingering Fear

That old fear of being falsely accused still lingers in the background sometimes. I don’t pretend it has disappeared. But I won’t let it run the show anymore. My life, my joy, and my mission — they belong in the light.

If you’re carrying fear too, I see you. I want to gently remind you: you were made for sunshine.

“The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” John 1:5

Finding Your Path to Healing

Acknowledging Your Feelings

It’s essential to acknowledge your feelings. Fear can be overwhelming, but recognizing it is the first step toward healing. Write down your thoughts. Talk to someone you trust. Sharing your story can lighten the burden.

Seeking Support

Don’t hesitate to seek support from friends, family, or professionals. You don’t have to face your fears alone. Surround yourself with people who uplift you and encourage you to step into the light.

Embracing Imperfection

Remember, perfection is unattainable. Embrace your imperfections. They make you human. Celebrate your small victories and learn from your mistakes. Each step you take towards embracing who you are is a step into the light.

Practicing Self-Care

Self-care is vital in overcoming fear. Take time for yourself. Engage in activities that bring you joy. Whether it’s reading, gardening, or simply enjoying a cup of tea, prioritize your well-being.

Living in the Light

Make a conscious effort to live in the light. Focus on positivity and gratitude. Surround yourself with uplifting messages and people. Let go of negativity and embrace the beauty of life.

Conclusion: A Journey Worth Taking

Fear may always be a part of life, but it doesn’t have to define you. Embrace the light and let it guide you. You are stronger than your fears. Remember, you were made for sunshine.

Let this journey be a testament to your resilience and strength. Step into the light and shine brightly.
